How it works

Each year, the awards shortlists are drawn up with the help of thousands of theatregoers who log on to nominate their favourites across all awards categories. The shortlists are announced at a launch event held in early December, when voting opens and runs until the end of January.

Nominations and Voting

Nominations and votes are limited to one per person and require an email address to maintain integrity of the submission. We do everything we can to ensure fairness across the board and many performers and productions mobilise their fanbase, so be sure to get involved and spread the word using #WOSAwards.

Eligibility

All professional productions that began between December 2017 and November 2018 are eligible in 18 of the 24 categories. The 6 exceptions are:

Best Off-West End Production

Any professional production that began in an Off-West End venue (in central London but not in the West End) between December 2017 and November 2018 is eligible.

Best Regional Production

Any professional production that began in a venue outside of central London between December 2017 and November 2018 is eligible.

Best Original Cast Recording

Any professional production, worldwide, which released an original cast recording before November 2018 is eligible.

Best Show Poster

Any professional production that began in the UK before November 2018 is eligible.

Best West End Show

Any production that began in a West End venue before November 2018 is eligible.

Equity Award for Services to Theatre

This Award acknowledges the hard work that takes place off stage to make productions happen. You can nominate any person that you would like to see recognised for their contribution to the theatre industry. This award will be decided on nominations only; it will not be shortlisted and will not be part of the voting process in December and January.

Who is eligible for these awards?

All professional productions that began between December 2017 and November 2018 are eligible in 18 of the 24 categories. How are the winners and nominees chosen?

Both the shortlist and the winners are decided entirely by public vote. From 1 November to 30 November members of the public can nominate their favourite person or production in each category. The shortlist is then put to public vote from 5 December to 31 January. How many nominations and votes are allowed per person? Nominations are limited to one per person and require an email address to maintain integrity of the submissions. When are nominations announced?

Shortlists are announced on 5 December 2018, and voting begins on that date.

What is the Awards Concert?

The concert is where the winners of the awards are announced, alongside performances from West End stars. This year’s concert will be held on Sunday 3 March and is open to the public.

How can I attend the Awards Concert?

The Awards Concert is primarily a public event, with tickets at a range of prices. A handful of tickets are held back for invited guests, including sponsors and individual nominees (and one guest each per nominee). For production category nominations, winners are provided with a pair of tickets. Producers or others connected to winners and nominees can purchase additional house seats.

How long have the WhatsOnStage Awards been running?

The WhatsOnStage Awards began in 2001, and the first Awards Concert was held in 2008. See full lists of previous winners in our archives.
