More than just a

Pretty Smile!

Healthy teeth - healthy body

While orthodontics certainly plays a key role in achieving
a perfect smile, braces can also be beneficial to your
overall health and wellness!

Straight Teeth

Many studies have shown that an attractive smile boosts self-esteem which is important at any age.

Healthy Gums

Straighter teeth are easier to brush, clean, and floss! The ability to take better care of the teeth through oral hygiene also helps prevent future cavities and periodontal disease.

Aligned Bite

Malocclusion – or a “bad bite” – can lead to problems with the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and even ineffective chewing and digestion problems.

Less Injury

Protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken or traumatized in an accident. Once repositioned and aligned, these teeth are at a decreased risk of being fractured.

SUCCESS STORIES

Happy patients stories

Isabelle
Student
My visits to Dr. Prisco were always a pleasant experience! I was nervous going at first but he always made me laugh and feel comfortable. I used to hate my smile but now I am proud of my smile.
Isabelle had an overjet and small jaw but through a palette expander and traditional braces, her jaws are aligned better and her teeth were straightened.

Description
I just recently had my braces taken off and to my amazement, underneath was the most beautiful smile I ever could have dreamed possible. I just wanted to thank you for giving me so much to smile about!
Orthodontics can give you the straight teeth and proper bite that will help you chew better, smile more often, and keep your teeth longer.

COMMON REASONS FOR BRACES

Bite issues might seem insignificant, especially if your teeth are generally straight. But, bite problems can cause people to bite their cheeks or damage their teeth. Overbites, which are sometimes called “buck teeth” occur when the top jaw is too far forward ahead of the bottom jaw. Underbites are the opposite problem, where the lower jaw is too far ahead of the upper jaw. Crossbites can also be problematic, since they mean that the upper teeth do not nest around the lower teeth when the mouth closes. An open bite, which occurs when the teeth do not close together when the mouth closes, can cause problems with effective chewing.

Bite Issues
Example

Teeth that are too far apart can give the smile a gap-toothed appearance, and make it hard to prevent plaque accumulation from between the teeth.

Spaced Teeth
Example

Too many teeth can cause dental crowding. Or it can come from a single tooth coming in crooked and disrupting the placement of the surrounding teeth. Crowding can make it difficult to clean the teeth, since some of the teeth can be behind others.

Crowded Teeth
Example

When you close your mouth, the line between your two front incisors should be the same on the top and bottom jaw. If this is not the case, you may have a misplaced midline, which can cause other orthodontic issues.

Tooth whitening (termed tooth bleaching when utilizing bleach), is either restoration of natural tooth shade or whitening beyond natural tooth shade, depending on the definition used.

Restoration of the underlying, natural tooth shade is possible by simply removing surface (extrinsic) stains (e.g. from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco) and calculus (tartar). This is achieved by having the teeth cleaned by a dental professional (commonly termed "scale and polish".

APPLIANCES

Clear, aesthetic braces are an increasingly popular choice with adults and teenagers, as they are less visible than traditional fixed braces. Brackets on aesthetic appliances are generally clear or tooth coloured. White or tooth-coloured wires can also be used for an even more discreet, natural look. Aesthetic appliances are only available as a private treatment option.
Metal braces are still popular for one very important reason – they work. And they work very well. Not only that, modern brackets are sleeker than ever, meaning they’re more comfortable, and they won’t give you nearly as much of a “metal mouth” look as braces of the past. And when it comes to efficiency for the most difficult malocclusions, it’s hard to beat metal braces.
Invisalign® has become a popular method of straightening “crooked” or unevenly spaced teeth due to its discreet system of clear plastic aligners. Invisalign® also allows patients to thoroughly clean their teeth with greater ease when compared to traditional braces. By removing the aligners to brush, floss, and rinse, patients can reduce the risk of plaque buildup, periodontal disease, and tooth decay.
Growth modification treatment involves the usage of appliances that will help prevent jaw discrepancies such as unbalanced growth between upper and lower jaws, and spacing between teeth. Growth Modification can be in the form of Twin Block, Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance and Headgear.
Surgical orthodontics may be used to treat adults with improper bites or certain aesthetic concerns. Typically, jaw growth stops by age 16 in females and 18 in males. In order to receive orthognathic surgery, the jaw must be done growing. The need for surgical orthodontics occurs when the jaws do not line up correctly, and a proper bite cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone. Orthognathic surgery will help properly align the jaw, and orthodontic braces will then be used to move the teeth into their proper positions.
